UMW Softball Sweeps Tuesday Doubleheader Over Eastern Mennonite

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept its way past Eastern Mennonite in a Tuesday doubleheader in Fredericksburg, Va.

Game 1 - Eagles win, 4-1.

After the first two-and-a-half innings went scoreless, the Eagles broke through with the game's first run in the third when Abby Fielder stole third, then was able to take home on the errant throw down to third base. 

In the fourth, UMW added another run to its total when Emma Dickson singled home Brigid Ward to push the lead to 2-0, then Shelby Presgrave singled, and thanks to an error from the EMU first baseman, was able to drive in Ward from first, then score herself on the same play.

The Eagles yielded a run in the seventh, but came away with a 4-1 win. Taylor Hudson went five shutout innings, yielding just three hits and a pair of walks, while Sofia Marshall recorded the save by pitching the final two innings in the win.

Game 2 - Eagles win, 7-1.

The Royals jumped out to the lead first after scoring their lone run in the top of the first. But from there, it was al UMW as Mary Washington plated its first run in the third inning when Erica Shoop was able to reach on an error that scored Taylor Moody. In the fifth, though, UMW broke out for six runs. 

It began with Bayly Yerigan's infield single that scored Fielder from second base, then Emily Angel singled Yerigan home with another infield single. Next, Brigid Ward ripped an inside-the-park home run that scored Hannah Steele and Marshall to put the Eagles ahead by five, 6-1.

UMW added another run in the sixth with a sac fly from Kennedy Darling to push the lead to 7-1.

Sydney Jester earned the win for Mary Washington, pitching four innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Anna Dobson got the final nine outs of Tuesday's doubleheader for her second save of the season.

The Eagles are back in action on Monday with a matchup at Messiah. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
