Battling through a pair of home runs, the University of Mary Washington baseball team erased a 2-0 deficit, turning it into a 3-2 win over Houghton in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader before blowing out the Highlanders, 19--4 in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Eagles faced a 2-0 deficit after a pair of solo home runs out Houghton out in front, but a two-run homer from
Noah Roots tied the score at two before
Bobby Ayscue's RBI triple gave UMW a 3-2 lead.
Justin Ritz picked up his third victory of the season after tossing six innings of two-run ball while
Connor Hassan picked up the save in the seventh.
In Game 2, UMW routed the Highlanders as an early 2-0 hole turned into a 10-2 lead thanks to a 10-run second inning.
Here's how the inning went: It began with an
Eric Powell two-run homer before
Tommy Martinez followed it up with a two-run homer of his own.
Ryan Schwarz flied out to left field to score
Oliver Martin to put the Eagles up 5-2, then
Ty Lowe reached on a fielding error, scoring another. Powell then reached on a fielder's choice before
Luke Guerzon capped the inning off with a three-run bomb.
In the third, Roots singled home another run to push the lead to 11-2. A pair of Highlander runs scored in the fourth and sixth, but in between, Burke Stiefman singled home a run.
And in the seventh, Schwarz reached on a fielding error to score another run, pushing UMW's lead to 14-4, then Noah Litcher drove home a run with a single before
Nate Dulevitz drove home three more with a bases-clearing triple, and
Charlie Grove singled home another.
The Eagles are back in action on Monday with a matchup against Manchester in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
