The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped its regular season finale, 72-58, on Saturday afternoon to tenth ranked Christopher Newport University. The Eagles enter the postseason with an 11-14 record.
The first half went back and forth with neither team grabbing a great advantage. In the raly going, the score was tied at two, four, six, eight, and ten, before a three-point basket gave UMW a three-point lead at 13-10. The lead would then change hands seven times, before CNU upped the lead to 36-28 with 3:00 left. Senior
Zack Blue scored the next seven points for UMW, and a pair of free throws from
Jadon Burgess trimmed the halftime margin to 38-37.
In the second, CNU opened with six straight points, but again UMW fought back, drawing to within 44-42 on a jumper from
Kye Robinson. A three point play from Robinson with 12:18 left gave the Eagles a 52-51 lead. The Captains answered with a 13-0 run, and led, 64-52, with 5:02 remaining. After the teams exchanged slam dunks, the Captains connected on a apir of free throws to cap the scoring.
Robinson led the Eagles with 15 points on 6-13 shooting, while Blue scored 13 and Young 12.Â
UMW shot 24-72 from the floor (33.3%), making 4-20 on three point attempts, and made 6-6 free throws. CNU shot 29-57 (50.9%), making 3-12 three point shots and 11-12 free throws. CNU led in rebounds, 46-29.Â
The Eagles will be back in action in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Salisbury, Md., next weekend.
