The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team took down Shenandoah on Wednesday evening 56-49 in Winchester, Va.
The Eagles were led by a game-high 16 points from first year
Breana Valentine, who went 7-of-9 from the floor, which included a 3-pointer. Valentine, too, also recorded six rebounds, while
Megan Baxter had 11 points and three assists.
UMW jumped out to a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and also went into the halftime break up by a pair of points, 27-25. In the third, the Hornets pulled to within a point, but an 11-point fourth was enough for Mary Washington to surpass Shenandoah on Wednesday night.
All told, Mary Washington went 21-of-51 (41.2%) from the field, which included five treys. The Eagles defense was stout as it held the Hornets to just a 17-of-59 line and allowed just a pair of 3-pointers on 19 attempts. Shenandoah also committed 19 turnovers, compared to Mary Washington's 15.
The Eagles are back in action this Saturday at 1 p.m. against Christopher Newport in Fredericksburg, Va.Â
