UMW Volleyball Splits with Stevenson, William Paterson in Saturday Tri Match

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team split a Saturday tri match with Stevenson University and William Paterson University in Owings Mills, Md. The Eagles move to 5-16 on the season.

UMW opened with an impressive 3-0 win over the host Mustangs, winning by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.

In the first game, the Eagles trailed, 3-2, but five straight points, thanks in part to three aces from Alice Holoubek, opened up a 7-3 lead. Stevenson roared back to pull to within 16-15, but a kill from sophomore Sarah Starling and another ace from Holoubek set the Eagles on their way, as they won seven of the last nine points of the game.

In the second, a 9-1 Eagle run was keyed by two kills from sophomore Calla Petz and first year Mackenzie Williams led the way. The third was back and forth, with the Eagles countering a 4-0 Mustang run with an 8-2 run to end the action.

Starling led the Eagles with 11 kills, while Williams posted nine and Natalie Brown six. Olivia Fortier scored 16 assists and Maura Munson added 11, and Petz led with 13 digs, while Sydney Aiken and Fortier each had 10.

The Eagles then dropped a 3-0 decision to William Paterson, 25-14, 25-22, 25-22. Brown led the Eagles with 10 kills in 22 attempts, while Starling added five. Fortier provided 10 assists and Munson nine, and Aiken led with 13 digs.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m.
