Mackenzie Williams scored a team-high 11 kills to lead the University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Roanoke College on Tuesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. Game scores were 25-14, 25-15, 25-23; the Eagles improve to 8-19 on the season.
In the first, the Eagles broke open a tight set with five straight points to extend their lead to 16-9, with Williams and
Alice Holoubek adding kills. Another run, keyed by two
Sarah Starling kills, extended the lead to 23-12 before UMW closed out the set.
The second saw Roanoke jump out to a 4-0 lead, but the Eagles answered with five straight to gain the lead. With the score tied at nine and
Julia Gustafson serving, UMW reeled off nine straight points, including a pair of aces from Gustafson. The Eagles cruised for a 25-15 win.
In the third, Roanoke again scored the first four points, and held a 16-9 lead. The Eagles then scored seven of the next eight points to draw within one, and a 5-0 spurt gave UMW a 21-18 lead. Roanoke stormed back to take a 23-22 lead, but three straight kills from Holoubek gave the Eagles the match win.
The Eagles were led by Williams' 11 kills, while
Maura Munson scored 30 assists to go with seven digs.
Kathleen Harbaugh posted five kills without an error and four total blocks, and
Sydney Aiken led with 12 digs. UMW hit .349 as a team on the day, with 36 kills against just six errors.
UMW will be back in action on Saturday, when they visit Salisbury University for a trimatch with the University of Lynchburg.
