The University of Mary Washington men's rugby team traveled to Buffalo, NY to play Guelph University on Saturday in the team's season opener, and came away with a 33-20 defeat for the 1st side.
The day game was very stop start with the referee not playing much advantage. UMW used its size to set up line outs and maul the ball over the line, with three impressive maul tries by
Nick Sydorowitz,
Max Plumb, and
Tobey Barnfield-Lee.
Josh Fowler put a fourth try in off a lineout as well. However, in the second half with the wind not at Guelph's back they took advantage and racked up the scores. UMW was still struggling to find points off the kicking tee and today it really impacted the score. UMW put four total tries in and Guelph scored five, with the final score of 20-33 to Guelph.Â
Â
The second side game how ever was completely different with UMW completely taking charge of the match. The freshman who played there first game for UMW today really put on a show with Grif Beven being a stand out player for the group.Â
UMW will return to action next Saturday when the Eagles host Mount St. Mary's College at 2:00 p.m.
