The University of Mary Washington men's rugby team hosted a tough, well coached Ohio State team in a D1A clash in Fredericksburg on Saturday, and came away with a hard earned 25-17 victory..
Around five minutes in, after a turnover caused by
Nick White, Calum Emmans sent a long pass to Ben Peters who sent a beautiful kick behind the defense where
David Fitzgerald chased and finished the try- RJ Berlington had the conversion to make the score 7-0.
After a few penalties and handling errors from the Mothers, Ohio State got on the board to tie it up 7-7 with about 15 minutes left in the half. Quickly following Ohio state's score,
Aiden Hayward received a pass from
Rhys James to score in the corner making it 12-7. RJ Berlington ended the half with a penalty goal from ~40 meters out to put the score at 15-7.

At about 30 minutes remaining, OSU committed a penalty in their end and RJ Berlington added three more points with penalty kick to make the score 18-14 in favor of the home side.
The score remained locked for a while until Ben Peters sent a pass to
Charlie Platt who broke the gain line and made 20 meters before passing to Tom Howard. Tom ran another 35 meters and popped a pass up to Peters who scored the try under the posts.
Jack Joyce added the conversion to make the score 25-14.
Shortly after the try the Mother's penalties hurt them again being forced to play down a man for another 10 minutes. OSU capitalized with a penalty kick to get the score to 25-17 but the home side defense did not let up any more points to keep that the final score.
The Mother's final contest of the fall will be a D1A Fall Classic bowl game in South Carolina on December 7th.
Second Side

Jack Joyce kicked an opening kickoff that found space and bounced out in front of Dash Prather-Long who scored the opening try in just under 10 seconds. Joyce converted the try from the touch line to make it 7-0.
The next score was a good passage of play from forwards that opened up the edge for Joyce to put a cross field kick into the hands of
Callum Dodds who finished the try in the corner making it 12-0.
Shortly after that a quick turnover ball was sent wide to see
Ace Cooper assist a try to Tom Howard who scored in the corner. 17-0 mothers

The connection from Cooper to Howard came up again late in the 1H with Dodds to finish the conversion this time- 31-0.

Matthew Clinton. Clinton looked up and saw space behind the defense and put a kick through. Joyce stayed with the play and touched the bouncing ball down in the try zone. 36-7 Mother's at halftime.
In the second half it was the same story as the 1H.
