The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 58-54 decision at North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 2-4 on the season.
The Eagles started swiftly, jumping out to a 10-1 lead in the opening minutes. Sophomore
Jay Randall had a pair of baskets, and guards
Jadon Burgess and
Cameron McCravy each connected on a three pointer. The Battling Bishops drew to within 10-9 at 13:26, but baskets from McCravy and Randall kept the Eagles ahead, until NC Wesleyan tied the score at 15-15 with 9:52 left.
A triple from McCravy and a a basket from sophomore
Kaden Bates upped the Eagle margin to three, at 19-16, with 5:45 remaining in the half. NC Wesleyan scored five straight late to take the lead, with a late basket from Bates trimming the margin to 25-24 at halftime.
To open the second, three pointers from first year
Jose Fudd and McCravy gave the Eagles a 32-29 lead. The lead would switch hands five times over the next seven minutes, before an 8-1 Bishops run gave them a game-high seven point lead, at 50-43, with 4:29 left. An 8-1 run by the Eagles followed, and the game stood tied at 51-51 with 2:12 remaining. NC Wesleyan scored the next five, but a three from Burgess with 10 seconds left drew UMW to within two. The Bishops connected for a pair of free throws for the final margin.
McCravy led the Eagles with 13 points on 5-10 shooting, including 3-7 from three-point land. Bates added 10 points on 5-6 shooting.Â
UMW shot 21-55 from the floor (38.2%), making 6-23 three-point ahots, and 6-9 free throws. NC Wesleyan went 18-53 from the floor (34%), making 7-20 three point attempts and 15-21 free throws. NC Wesleyan led in rebounds, 46-28.
The Eagles will return to action on December 3, when they host Southern Virginia University at 7:30 p.m.
