The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped an 87-82 decision at Marietta College in the Pioneers' tipoff tournament championship on Saturday. The Eagles fall to 2-2 on the season.
The game was an entertaining battle, in which the teams traded the lead with huge runs, and then battled through a tight contest for the final 20 minutes. In the first half, the Eagles led by seven, then trailed by as many as 10, before drawing to within two at halftime, 39-37. Both offenses opened up in the second half, as the Pioneers outscored the Eagles, 48-45, in a strong offensive effort both ways.
Fifth year senior
Zack Blue continued his strong play, leading the Eagles wih 24 points on 7-14 shooting, including 6-9 three point attempts and 4-5 free throws. Freshman guard
Kye Robinson scored a career high 18 points, on 6-8 shooting, including 2-2 on three pointers and 4-6 free throws. Also in double figures were sophomore forward
Jay Randall with 12 points, and sophomore guard
Jadon Burgess, with 11. Robinson also led the Eagles with eight points.
UMW shot 50% from the field (29-58), making 12-23 three point tries and 12-17 free throws, while Marietta shot 48.5% (32-66), making 12-27 three point attempts and 11-23 free throws. Marieta led in rebounds, 41-31, and each team had 11 turnovers in the game.
Bl;ue and Robinson were named to the all-tournament team.
The Eagles will make their home debut on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against Randolph-Macon College.
