UMW Field Hockey Edges Stevenson, 3-2, in Final Seconds to Improve to 7-3

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team used the strength of two second quarter goals to pull ahead, and another with 0:00 on the clock on a penalty stroke from senior Emma Bernard, to defeat Stevenson University, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in Owings Mills, Md. With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-3 on the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, UMW jumped ahead with a score from Lauren Boucher on a Bernard assist at 17:20. The Mustangs knoted the score at 1-1 with a goal at 20:42, but the Eagles regained the lead at 23:08, as Grayson Scott scored her seventh goal of the year on a pass from Monique Lipton.

The game remained 2-1 until the closing minutes of regulation, when Stevenson rallied for the tying goal with just 1:11 left. The Eagles gained a pair of penalty corners as time expired in regulation, and on the second, drew a penalty stroke. Bernard converted on the untimed play, giving UMW the victory.

The Eagles led in shots, 28-8, as well as penalty corners, 16-3. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb made five saves on the day.

UMW will return to action on Wednesday, when the Eagles visit Catholic University at 6:00 p.m.
