No. 25 UMW Women's Basketball Defense Strong as It Downs Southern Virginia, 52-35

Tuesday night marked yet again another great defensive showing from No. 25 Mary Washington (6-1) as it beat Southern Virginia handedly down in Buena Vista, Va., 52-35.

The Eagles held the Knights to just a 32.6% mark from the floor (14-of-43), while allowing Southern Virginia to make just two of its 16 shots from deep (12.5%). UMW forced  33 turnovers -- as it came away with 26 points off of Southern Virginia miscues.

Jordan Carpenter and Maddy Jenisch recorded five steals each, while Sydney Sherman came away with a trio of blocks. For the evening, the Eagles left Buena Vista with 18 steals, five blocks and controlled the boards, 34-25.\

Southern Virginia didn't record double-digit points in any quarter until the fourth quarter as the Eagles held them to eight points in the first two quarter, and five points in the third, until the Knights finally broke through with 14 in the fourth.

On offense, Carpenter led the way once more in scoring with 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting, while Keagan Schwab made a pair of 3-pointer's and came away with 10 points on the day. Keira Rohrbach led all scorers off the bench with eight points in 18 total minutes of action. Carpenter also led in total rebounds with eight.

As a team, the Eagles shot 33.9% from the floor and were 4-of-11 (36.4%) from deep. The Eagles never trailed in the game and led from the 9:01 mark in the first quarter until the final buzzer sounded.

Mary Washington is back in action on Saturday for its home opener with Marymount. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
