UMW Men's Basketball Falls to Rowan in Final Seconds of OT, 76-75

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a tough 76-75 decision in overtime against Rowan University on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va. The Eagles slip to 3-2 on the season.

The Eagles overcame a slow start and a six-point halftime deficit, shooting an even 50% from the field (15-30) in the second 20 minutes, to draw even and force overtime. In the extra period, the Eagles grabbed the lead with nine seconds remaining on a layup from Zach Blue, but the Profs gained the game winner with a three pointer with less than three seconds left.

UMW was led by senior Greg Rowson and junior Trey Pittman, who each scored 22 points. Rowson made 8-18 field goals and 6-9 free throws, and also hauled in 15 rebounds. Pittman netted his 22 points on 10-17 shooting from the floor and 2-5 from the free throw line. Blue scored 11 and Daniel Peterson grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 37.8% from the floor (28-74), shooting 0-12 from three-point range, and 19-29 from the free throw line. Rowan shot 37.0% (27-73), making 10-36 three point tries and 12-18 free throws. UMW dominated the boards, 60-41.

UMW will return to action on Sunday in Newport News, as the Eagles will face Buffalo State University at noon in Newport News.
