UMW Women's Basketball Falls to Salisbury, 48-43

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 48-43 decision to Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 15-6 on the season.

The Eagles started swiftly, limiting the Sea Gulls to two baskets in the first quarter in building a 16-5 lead. UMW used free throws a=from senior Tory Martin and sophomore Jordan Carpenter in building a 4-2 lead early. After a Sea Gull three pointer, the Eagles closed the auarter on a 12-0 run, spanning 6:14. Freshman Megan Baxter and sophomore Keagan Schwab connected for three pointers to start the run, and Sydney Sherman, Ashley Martin, and Molly Sharman added baskets in the streak.

After UMW used a Karissa Highlander bucket to open the second, Salisbury answered with seven straight, to cut the margin to 18-12 with 3:14 left before intermission. A three pointer from senior Bri Harper ran the Eagle lead back to 21-12, but Salisbury scored the next seven to draw to within two, before Ashley Martin hit a three pointer in the final second to give UMW a 24-19 halftime advantage.

In the third, Martin opened the scoring with a layup, but Salisbury would score the next 12 points to take a 31-26 lead with 1:19 remaining in the third. The Sea Gulls carried the five point lead to the fourth quarter.

Salisbury started the fourth with five straight points to extend its lead to 38-28, but the Eagles were able to fight back to draw to within three, at 43-40, on a Baxter three pointer with 1:44 left and free throw with 1:10 on the clock. The Sea Gulls connected on enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.

UMW shot 31.3% from the floor (15-48), making 5-18 three point attempts and 8-15 free throws. Salisbury shot 24.1% from the field (14-58), making 4-9 three point tries and 16-22 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 45-36, but fell prey to 26 turnovers in the game.

The Eagles will host St. Mary's College (MD) on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. for senior night.
