The University of Mary Washington Men's Basketball fell to Christopher Newport University, 97-84, on Saturday at home. The Eagles fall to 11-7 on the season and 1-2 in CAC play.

CNU jumped out to an early 8-3 advantage just 2:53 into the game. Freshman Trey Barber knocked down a three-pointer to bring the Eagles within just one, 11-10. From there, the Captains went on an 8-0 run, but the Eagles followed with a 8-0 run to tie the game at 18-18 with 12:10 to play in the half.

UMW took the lead 24-23 on a three-pointer from Ra'Shawn Cook. Da'Shawn Cook extended the lead to four, 31-27, on a layup with 6:58 remaining. Greg Rowson beat his man for a layup with 4:53 left that put the Eagles up 37-31. CNU closed the half on a 17-2 run to take a 48-39 lead at the half.

UMW started the second half with a block by Trey Barber and Rowson. Rowson would add a layup after getting a defensive rebound putting the score at 54-42. The Captains would respond with a three-pointer but the Eagles would shortly follow with three free throws made by Rowson. A foul by the Captains would allow Riley Welch to sink two free throws.

After a missed three-pointer attempt by CNU, Barber got a defensive rebound, leading to a three-point jump shot by Welch to narrow the score to 66-58. CNU regained control of the game until a jump shot by Barber brought the Eagles down by 10. Back-to-back three-pointers put the Captains at a 89-73 lead. Cook would add two jump shots and a free throw in the final minute.  

UMW shot 47.5% from the field, 40.0% from three-point range, and 73.3% from the free throw line. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to York (Pa.) for a game at 3 p.m.
