UMW Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches with Johns Hopkins and Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team split with Johns Hopkins University and Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon in the UMW Classic. The Eagles fell to Johns Hopkins, 3-1, before downing Virginia Wesleyan 3-0. UMW moves to 3-5 on the season.

In the Johns Hopkins match, the Eagles dropped the first set 25-15 before winning the second set 25-20. The Blue Jays then won the next two sets 25-12 and 25-14. 

Savannah Powers led the Eagles with 12 kills in the first match, hitting .167. Peyton Dunow and Tenley Hares both added 11 kills a piece, with the latter hitting a team-leading .171. Wren Berry dished out 33 assists. Kendal Hall had 16 digs for UMW. Abby Wiles pitched in 13 digs and Makenna Santinga pitched in 10 digs. 

The Eagles came out ready to play in the second match against Virginia Wesleyan as they won in straight sets 25-18, 25-17, and 25-17. 

Dunow led the way in the second match with 10 kills. Hares added nine kills, Powers put down eight kills, and Krista Rodgers had seven kills. Berry matched her total in the first match with 33 assists and also added nine digs. Hall accounted for 14 digs and one service ace. Hares had four service aces. 

The All-Tournament Team was announced after the last match. The MVP of the tournament was Natalie Aston from Johns Hopkins. Joining Aston on the All-Tournament team from Johns Hopkins was Simone Bliss and Louisa Kishton. For W&L, Brynne Gould and Caroline Gard both made the All-Tournament team. Berry was named to the team for UMW and Alyssa Taylor gained the recognition for Virginia Wesleyan.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday as they will host Catholic University at 7 p.m.
