UMW Men's Basketball Tops Marymount, 65-54, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team saw three players reach double figures in downing Marymount University, 65-54, on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Saints slip to 6-4.

Marymount opened with a run to take a 10-4 lead through 6:15 of play, but UMW used a jump shot from Khiorie Stewart and a three pointer from sophomore Riley Welch to draw to within 10-9 with 13:11 remaining in the first half. Another Stewart basket gave the Eagles the lead, and after a Saints basket, the Eagles continued their run, with layups from freshman Ra'Shawn Cook and senior Jacob Williams and a three pointer from senior Tyler Withers, and the UMW lead stood at 18-12 with 9:50 left.

Marymount answered with a 10-2 run of their own to grab a 22-20 advantage with 3:29 remaining. Welch then connected for a pair of three pointers and Stewart sank two free throws with 1:40 on the clock to push the Eagle lead to six, at 28-22. The Saints capped the first half scoring with a basket to trim the halftime margin to 28-24.

Williams opened the second half with a jumper, and freshman Greg Rowson hit a three pointer with 16:04 left to give the Eagles a 33-25 lead. After a Marymount three point play, Williams connected from long distance, and another basket from Stewart pushed the UMW lead to 10, at 38-28. A pair of baskets from senior Johnny Cronin and a three pointer from sophomore Jordan Shaw gave UMW a 17 point cushion at 48-31 with 9:37 to play.

The Eagles kept the Saints at bay down the stretch, as the visitors would trim the margin to as few as 11 with 4:52 to play, but each time the Eagles would answer. Cronin and Williams scored four down the stretch, and Da'Shawn Cokk scored on a pair off ree throws with 1:08 left to give UMW a 65-49 lead. Marymount scored the final five points of the game to cut the final to 65-54.

Welch led the Eagles with 14 points on 4-6 shooting from distance and a pair of free throws, while Cronin scored 13 and added nine rebounds. Williams scored 11 and hauled in seven rebounds.

Mary Washington shot 37.5% from the floor (21-56), making 8-18 three point attempts, and 15-22 free throw tries. Marymount went 17-43 from the field (39.5%), including 9-26 on three pointers, and went 11-19 from the free throw line. The Eagles held a 36-35 rebounding edge. UMW forced 28 Saints turnovers.

The Eagles will break for final exams before returning to visit Shenandoah University on December 17 at noon.
