Balanced Attack Leads UMW Women's Soccer Past St. Mary's, 4-0

Box Score

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team used a balanced attack, as four different players scored, to defeat St. Mary's 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 6-2-1 overall, and 2-0 in the CAC.

In the first half, the UMW offense had the SMC defense on their heels as they totaled five shots. The Eagles had a great look at goal in the 15th minute when Corinne Carson made a move to get by a defender and crossed it in front of the goal but UMW failed to get a touch on the ball and it slid by. Lizzie Brooks had a shot that was saved and then had another that sailed just high, both occurring in the 24th minute.

Freshman Margot Brown put the Eagles up 1-0 as she scored her first goal of the season. Brown took a shot from the top of the box that bounced off the cross bar, off the goalie, and then into the net. UMW's defense held strong from there as they only allowed one shot in the last 25 minutes, which resulted in an easy save by Kelcie Macomber.

The Seahawks controlled the ball early in the second half, as Macomber had to make two saves in the first three minutes. St. Mary's added a couple of corner kicks, but couldn't convert any as the UMW defense got the ball out of harms way.

After the first nine minutes, UMW dominated the second half. In the 54th minute, Katie Rauch took a penalty kick for the Eagles. The PK was saved, but Rauch controlled the rebound and put the ball away to give UMW a 2-0 lead. Just seven minutes later, Alexia Inge put UMW up 3-0 as she put away a cross from Carson.

Malorie Joseph scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from Inge to put the Eagles up 4-0 in the 65th minute. UMW held the Seahawks to just three shots over the last 30 minutes and held on to secure their fifth shutout of the season.

The Eagles had 13 shots and one corner kick. Macomber made four saves and is now 4-2-1.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host Frostburg St. in a CAC matchup at 4 p.m.
