UMW Volleyball Tops St. Mary's, 3-0, in CAC Quarterfinals

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team topped St. Mary's, 3-0, in the CAC quarterfinals on Tuesday night in Ron Rosner Arena. Sophomore Tenley Hares led the team with 16 kills and junior Savannah Powers chipped in 13 of her own. The Eagles improve to 19-10 on the season.

In the early going, St. Mary's took an early two point lead at 8-6. Hares recorded a kill on an assist from Berry to tie the game up at 10 a piece. From there UMW seized control as they scored four straight points and leading to a timeout by the Seahawks. Hares and Alana Harris recorded a block and then Powers put down a kill to give the Eagles a 17-12 lead. With UMW leading 20-16, the Eagles put down three straight kills by Peyton Dunow, Leslie Walters, and Hares to go up 23-16. A service error by the Seahawks gave the Eagles a 25-18 first set win.

UMW jumped out to a 3-0 in the early portion of the second set. The Eagles kept their lead at three, 7-4, after a kill from Dunow. Walters and Dunow recorded back-to-back blocks that gave UMW an 11-5 advantage. The Eagles continued to grow their lead and went up double digits, 21-11 on a Berry ace. Powers closed out the second set, 25-13, on a kill from Berry. 

The Seahawks gained a 1-0 lead in the third set, but was quickly erased as the Eagles reeled off six straight points capped by an ace from Ryan Cho. Berry served another ace to help the Eagles take an 10-2 lead. UMW maintained their lead at eight as Walters put down a kill from Berry to make it 15-7. A kill by Powers and a block from Harris put the Eagles up 12, 21-9. The Seahawks had an attack error for the last point, and UMW won 25-10.

Dunow recorded five kills for the Eagles, while Berry dished out 33 assists. Cho recorded another great game on defense as she finished with 22 digs. 

UMW will be back in action on Thursday as they will host Salisbury in the CAC semifinals with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
