Late First Half Fury Lifts UMW Women's Soccer Past Penn State Harrisburg, 2-0

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team erupted for a pair of scores in a 2:36 span late in the first half to defeat Penn State Harrisburg, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 9-2-1 on the season, and 5-0 in CAC play, and clinch at least the second seed in the CAC Tournament.

Against the defensive-minded Lions, the Eagles were able to run up a comfortable advantage in shots, but couldn't solve the hosts until 38:08, when Corinne Carson scored on a Lindsey Hendrickson assist. Just 2:36 later, PSU Harrisburg was whsitled for a foul in the penalty area, and Hendrickson connected on the ensuing penalty kick, giving the Eagles an insurance tally.

In all, the Eagles led in shots, 15-4, including a 11-3 margin in shots on frame. The Lions led in corner kicks, 4-2. UMW goalkeeper Kelcie Macomber stopped three shots in gaining her fourth straight shutout, while Kayla Arnold had nine stops for Harrisburg.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m. with first place in the league standings on the line.
