Pamlanye's Career High 20, Double Double Lead UMW Women Past Southern Va., 77-59

Junior guard Jordan Pamlanye scored a career high 20 points and added 10 rebounds and five steals to propel the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 77-59 victory over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 9-9 overall, and 7-4 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead, holding a 17-11 advantage through the first quarter. After the teams traded baskets to open play, the Knights scored five straight to take a 7-2 advantage, but layups from Pamlanye and Taylor Barton trimmed the deficit to one with 6:52 left in the first. The teams again traded baskets before an 8-1 run to end the frame gave the Knights a six-point lead after one.

In the second, the Eagles erupted for 25 points and held the Knights to 15 to take the lead to halftime. An 11-0 run by UMW to start the period kickstarted the offense, as Pamlanye was the catalyst, scoring five in the stretch. Seven straight So. Va. points gave them a 24-22 lead with 5:33 to play, and an 8-3 Eagle run capped the half to give them a 36-32 lead at intermission.

The Eagles would widen the margin in the third, outscoring the visitors, 26-11. Freshman madison Shifflett scored five quick points as the Eagles grabbed a 43-34 lead, and five straight points from junior McKenzie Jenkins upped the lead to double figures, at 50-38, with 6:30 left. Shifflett made a layup and Jenkins a pair of free throws to up the lead to 14, and a Pamlanye three point play saw the lead grow to 57-40 with 1:42 left. Another Shifflett three pointer gave UMW a 60-41 lead, and UMW held an 18-point advantage into the fourth.

The teams matched points in the fourth leading to the 18-point margin of victory. Pamlanye scored five in the final frame, with Meghan Comer adding four and Emily Thompson three.

Pamlanye shot 8-12 from the floor and 4-6 from the line for her 20. Shifllett was 5-8 shooting with a pair of threes for 15 points, and Jenkins added 12. UMW shot 42.9% from the field (27-63), making 5-18 three point tries and 18-28 free throws. Southern Va. shot 40% (26-65), making 3-11 three pointers and 4-8 free throws. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 46-32.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University at 2 p.m. in a key CAC contest.
