UMW Women's Basketball Falls at Marymount, 57-46, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team team dropped a 57-46 decision at Marymount University on Saturday in Arlington, Va. The Eagles slip to 7-8 overall, and 6-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles gained the lead in the early going, leading 13-12 after one quarter. UMW scored first with a pair of Jordan Pamlanye free throws and a Taylor Barton basket, but the Saints responded with the next five. Meghan Comer gave the Eagles the lead again with a three pointer with 7:29 left, and Tory Martin layup pushed the UMW lead to 9-7. Back to back Saints baskets gave them the lead, but UMW used an Emily Miller layup to lead, 13-12, after 10 minutes.

Marymount opened the second with three straight baskets to take an 18-13 advantage. A Barton basket stemmed the tide, and a Comer bucket with 4:17 left trimmed the deficit to 18-17. The Saints ended the half on an 8-0 run to lead, 26-17, at intermission.

Marymount opened the lead up to 13 before a pair of Martin free throws with 6:12 left in the third cut the margin to 32-21. The Eagles gained a three pointer from McKenzie Jenkins sandwiched around a pair of Marymount threes, and the Saints led 38-26 with 3:59 remaining. The Eagles used a three from Emily Thompson and a pair of Pamlanye free throws to move to within seven, at 40-33, and trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter.

The Saints opened the fourth on a 7-1 run, and led, 51-36, after four minutes. A pair of Jenkins free throws with 1:11 left got the deficit under 10 points, but two late free throws gave Marymount the 11-point win.

The Eagles shot 44% from the field (16-36), making 3-10 three pointers and 11-14 free throws. Marymount shot 34.9% from the floor (22-63), making 5-12 three pointers and 8-12 free throws. The Saints led in rebounding, 37-28.

UMW was led by Barton, who turned in a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Christopher Newport University at 5:30 p.m. in another CAC showdown.
