Three Reach Double Figures as UMW Women's Basketball Pulls Away from Southern Va., 64-51

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team saw three players reach double figures in a 64-51 victory at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference action in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles move to 3-4 overall, and 2-1 in CAC play.

The Eagles held on to a slim lead throughout much of the first quarter, scoring 21 points while allowing 15. UMW held an 11-10 lead midway through the quarter, but three pointers from freshman Madison Shifflett and senior Kendall Parker upped the advantage to 19-10 with 2:41 left. AFter the teams traded baskets, SVU added another, and the Eagles led, 21-15, through 10 minutes.

In the second, the Knights drew to within two points at 22-20 with less than a minute into action. Each time the Eagles would try to pull away, the Knights stayed close, and UMW held a 32-27 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, both teams played even up, with each scoring 11 points, and the Eagles led, 43-38, heading toward the fourth quarter. Junior Jordan Pamlanye scored five points in the frame.

The Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter, responding to a Knights run with a three point play from Pamlanye with 5:42 remaining. A pair of Parker free throws with 2:34 left extended the lead to 58-49, and four more free throws from Parker sealed the decision.

Parker led the Eagles with 19 points on 4-10 shooting from the floor and 8-10 from the free throw line. Megan Comer scored 13 off the bench for the Eagles, while Pamlanye scored 11. UMW shot 18-60 from the field (30%), making 4-18 three pointers, and 24-38 free throws. Southern Virginia shot 19-65 (29.2%), making 1-12 three point tries and 12-19 free throws.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Salisbury University at 1 p.m.
