UMW Falls To Carnegie Mellon, 83-65, on Sunday Afternoon in the Championship of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to Carnegie Mellon University, 83-65, on Sunday afternoon in the championship of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Tournament. Sophomore guard Mark Madison led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points. The Eagles slip to 4-1 on the season.

In the first half, Carnegie Mellon got off to a hot start and scored seven straight points. Sophomore A.J. Robinson got the Eagles on the board with a three pointer to make it 7-3 at the 17:14 mark. The two teams traded buckets over the 3:46 and a Khiorie Stewart layup cut the lead to 13-10. 

With 7:27 left in the first half, Stewart made another layup to put Eagles down four, 18-14. From there, the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon went on an 18-3 run to close the half. Carnegie Mellon went into halftime with a lead of 36-17. UMW shot 19.4% in the first half.

In the second half, Carnegie Mellon used a 7-2 run to gain their largest lead of the afternoon at 26. Over the next 3:28, UMW used a 13-3 run to cut the lead to 48-32. A Drew Johnson three pointer cut the lead to 15 with 13:14 left. 

Senior forward Eric Shaw made a layup with 9:55 left in the second half, to get the Eagles within 13 at 57-44. With 5:16 left the Tartans went up 69-49. A three pointer by Madison with 1:32 left cut the lead to 13, but that was as close as UMW would get. 

Shaw finished with 11 and was named to the all-tournament team. Stewart chipped in 10 and Robinson added nine. Johnson and Johnny Cronin combined for 16 points on 7-9 shooting. Carnegie Mellon was led by Ryan Maha who scored 19 points. 

UMW shot 34.8% (23-66) from the field, making 9-26 three pointers, and 10-15 free throws. Carnegie Mellon shot 52.7% from the field, making 8-15 three pointers, and 17-31 free throws. The Tartans out-rebounded UMW 48-28.

Mary Washington will host St. Mary's (MD.) on Wednesday in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 8 p.m.
