UMW Women's Soccer Tops St. Mary's, 2-0, on Wednesday; Hewson Wins 100th

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team used the strength of two second half goals to defeat St. Mary's College, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference action. The win was also the 100th in the career of Eagle head coach Corey Hewson.

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles found the nets on a direct free kick from sophomore Brielle Mitchell, whose direct shot was placed perfectly in the upper corner of the goal. The Eagles added another tally at 77:02, Erica Ganthner finished a quality chance from 12 yards out. Freshman Brooke Bauman beat a defender on the right and slid to the cutting Ganthner, who beat the goalkeeper for an insurance score.

The Eagles led in shots, 15-9, while the Seahawks led in corner kicks, 6-4. UMW goalkeeper Haley Randall made five saves, while St. Mary's' Sydney Larkin added a pair for the visitors.

Mary Washington will host ninth ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
