UMW Men's Basketball Falls at Salisbury in CAC Semifinals, 83-78

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped an 83-78 decision at Salisbury University on Thursday night in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinal round. The Eagles close the season with a record of 15-12.

In the early going, the two teams exchanged buckets for the first eight minutes of action. Salisbury then took a five point lead, and was able to extend the lead to 10 off a three and a pair of free throws at the 11:17 mark.
The Eagles responded with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 25-25 with 8:36 remaining. T.J. Jones and Asa Scott each had five points in the run. Salisbury scored to take the lead back at 27-25 and controlled the lead for the remaining of the half. Mark Madison nailed two free throws with seven seconds left, but Salisbury hit a last second tip in to bring the score to 44-39 at the break.

The Eagles came out hot after intermission, opening the half on a 15-8 run and taking a 54-52 lead at the 13:13 mark. Five from Madison, five from Jones, three from Lutkenhaus, and two from Shaw fueled the run. Salisbury responded with a 14-2 spurt to take the lead at 68-56 with 7:51 remaining. The Sea Gulls were able to extend the gap to as much as 15, but the Eagles clawed back to cut the lead to two at 77-75 on a layup from Scott with 28 seconds left. Scott hit a three in the finals seconds, but it was not enough as Salisbury went a perfect 6-6 from the line to close out the game.
Madison led the Eagles with 24 points, while Jones poured in 23. Scott added 11, going a perfect 4-4 from the field.

Mary Washington shot 46.3% from the field (25-54), making 9-22 three pointers and 19-24 free throws.  Salisbury shot 45.0% from the field (27-60), making 14-27 three pointers and 15-22 free throws. UMW held a 37-28 advantage on the boards.
