UMW Women's Basketball Pulls Away for 74-50 Win at Southern Virginia on Wednesday Night

Freshman Elizabeth Dofflemyer scored a game-high 19 points, and senior guard Megan Green flirted with a triple double as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 74-50, on Wednesday night in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 13-3 overall, and 7-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The first quarter was closely contested, ending in a tie at 13-13. After Dofflemyer opened the scoring with a three pointer, the Knights scored nine straight to grab a 9-3 advantage. Midway through the first, a three pointer from Kendall Parker cut the deficit to 9-6, and a pair of Meghan Comer free throws with 2:01 gave the Eagles an 11-10 advantage. After a Sarah Listenbee layup, the Knights closed the quarter with the final three points, sending the game into the second frame at 13-13.

In the second, the Eagles were held without a point for the first 6:31, as Southern Virginia opened up an 18-13 lead. But UMW exploded for 16 points in the final 3:29, keyed by a pair of Dofflemyer three pointers. The Eagles took a 29-23 advantage to halftime.

Again in the third, Southern Virginia stuck close, as UMW outscored the hosts, 20-18. Seven different Eagles found the scoring column in the frame, and UMW entered the fourth quarter with the lead, 49-41.

The fourth quarter was all UMW, outscoring the Knights, 25-9. After the squads traded six points apiece to start the fourth, UMW reeled off 13 straight to take over. Dofflemyer scored four in the run, while Brianne Comden and Taylor Barton each added three.

Dofflemyer made 6-9 shots, connecting on 3-5 three pointers and 4-7 free throws. She added four rebounds and four steals. Parker scored 12, and Green scored nine points and added nine rebounds and 10 assists.

The Eagles shot 36.2% from the field (25-69), making 8-28 three pointers and 16-24 free throws. Southern Virginia shot 31.8% from the field (14-44), making 2-11 three pointers and 20-32 free throws. The Eagles forced 30 Knight turnovers.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday against York College at 1:00 p.m., weather permitting.
