#15 UMW Field Hockey Blanks Eastern Mennonite, 11-0, on Wednesday Night; Steele Gains Career Points Record

The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team sprinted out to an 8-0 halftime lead en route to an 11-0 victory at Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday night. Senior forward Jenna Steele scored a pair of goals to break the UMW career points record; the Eagles improve to 8-3 on the season.

Sophomore Morgan LaRowe started the scoring for the Eagles 5:26 into play, scoring on her on rebounded shot, and then assisted senior Nicole Guinn at 6:03 to push the lead to 2-0. Senior Kathleen Namey scored at 9:12 on a pass from senior Haley Kane on a penalty corner, and then scored again six minutes later on another Kane assist.

Kane scored at 16:47 unassisted, and a minute later, Steele broke the career points mark with an unassisted goal. Junior Christine Loehr scored at 23:20 on a Carlee Budd pass, and Budd scored on a Kane assist to cap the first half scoring.

Sophomore Noor Varjabedian scored five minutes into the second half, and Steele scored again at ten minutes elapsed in the second. Three minutes later, Loehr scored on a penalty shot.

The Eagles led in shots, 32-6, and in penalty corners, 11-2. Jessica Cavolt and Caroline Freeman each had three saves for the Eagles, while Kelsey Troyer had 11 saves for EMU.

Steele now has 148 career points, three more than Jessica Morris, who had 145 points from 1998-2001. Kane's four assists on the day also breaks a school mark.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Wesley College at 1:00 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.
