Kane's Hat Trick, Baker's OT Goal Lift #8 UMW Field Hockey Past Lynchburg, 5-4

Box Score

Sophomore Haley Kane scored three goals, and senior All-American Caitlin Baker scored the game winner in overtime to give eighth-ranked Mary Washington a 5-4 win at Lynchburg College on Wednesday evening in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament quarterfinal. The Eagles improve to 10-0 on the season.

The Eagles found themselves in an unfamiliar position of being down, 2-0, in the opening minutes, as Lynchburg's Katie Kline scored twice to give the Hornets a two-goal advantage. Kane scored with 19:46 left in the first half on a Mallory Peebles assist to cut the deficit in half, and sophomore Carlee Budd scored on a penalty stroke to tie the affair at two with 9:50 remaining.

The Hornets answered with a goal with less than seven minutes left in the half, and led, 3-2, at halftime. Kane scored her second goal of the night 11:24 into the second half on a Kathleen Namey assist, and that pair connected again exactly six minutes later to give UMW a 4-3 lead.

Lynchburg's Taylor Quillen tied the score at four with 8:48 remaining, and despite a late barrage of shots from UMW, the game moved to overtime. Baker scored the game winner 5:35 into the first extra period on an assist from sophomore Jenna Steele.

"I'm so proud of our team for staying strong and finishing the game with a well-fought win", said Kane, who scored her first collegiate hat trick. Baker added, "Lynchburg is always a tough game for us, but we fought back hard and it was great to end with a win." Baker scored the eventual game winner against the Hornets in last year's NCAA Tournament matchup.

The Eagles led in shots, 28-14, and in penalty corners, 16-5. Junior goalie Emily Badis had eight saves in goal for Mary Washington. UMW will visit York College of Pa. in their Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
