Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) and
Brenna Hill (McLean, Va., Langley) each scored two goals to lead the 11th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-2 victory at Eastern Mennonite University on Sunday in Harrisonburg. The Eagles improve to 8-2 on the season.
Baker opened the scoring less than six minutes into play on the first of
Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) 's three assists on the day. Hill scored on a George assist less than two minutes later, and scored again three and a half minutes after that to up the Eagle lead to 3-0.
Baker scored her second goal with 11 minutes later on a George assist, and senior
Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) upped the lead to 5-0 on an assist from freshman
Amy Abernathy (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne), with the Eagles holding a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Abernathy scored 15 minutes into the second half, and after a pair of Royals goals, freshman
Christine Downie (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) scored on an
Amy Stevens (Annandale, Va., Annandale) assist to move the final score to 7-2.
The Eagles again proved efficient offensively, scoring seven times on 23 shots, with EMU taking 18 shots. UMW led in penalty corners, 15-10, and junior goalies
Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) and
Katie Gerbes (Forest Hill, Md., Fallston) each allowed a goal in splitting time in the Eagle cage.
Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host Hood College in a CAC game starting at 4:00 p.m.
