Baker's Goal Lifts #18 UMW Field Hockey Past St. Mary's

Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) scored the game winning goal with 54 seconds left in the first overtime period as the 18th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team topped St. Mary's College, 2-1, on Tuesday in St. Mary's City, Md. The Eagles improve to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

After a scoreless first half, the Seahawks tallied first, as as Paige Decker scored seven minutes after halftime. The Eagles tied it with 2:30 remaining as junior Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) scored on a Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) assist.

In the extra period, Baker scored on the Eagles' seventh shot of the frame, rifling a shot from the top of the circle. In all, the Eagles led in shots, 28-6, and in penalty corners, 16-6. Freshman goalie Emily Badis (Kennett Square, Pa., Kennett) had two saves and senior defender Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) had a defensive save for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will host Stevenson University on Saturday for Homecoming starting at 1:00 p.m. in another CAC contest.
