McRae's 25 Points Leads UMW Women's Basketball Past Randolph-Macon, 71-54

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Sophomore guard Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) scored 25 points, and the University of Mary Washington scored a season-high 71 points in defeating Randolph-Macon College, 71-54, on Monday in nonconference action from Goolrick Gymnasium. the Eagles improve to 9-3, while the Yellow jackets fall to 8-3.

Randolph-Macon seized the early lead, and led by as many as 12 points at 20-8 with 13:26 left in the first half, thanks in part to seven three point baskets in the stanza. The Jackets led, 28-17, with 9:13 left in the half, before the Eagles closed the half by allowing just three points in the final nine minutes with a 16-3 run to lead, 33-31, at intermission. Lauren Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) made 4-6 shots for eight points in the half, keying the charge.

Mary Washington brifly lost the lead to start the second half, but a 12-2 run gave the Eagles their first double-digit lead of the night at 49-38 with 8:46 to play. the Jackets cut the deficit to seven at 49-42, but an alley-oop layin and foul shot by McRae, followed by a three-pointer from Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) (13 points) raised the lead to 15, at 57-42. UMW upped the lead to as many as 22 , and kept the 17-point margin for the final score.

McRae had 25 points on 8-13 shooting, and also grabbed eight rebounds for the Eagles, who won the rebounding battle, 46-37. Wimmer scored 13 points and added five assists, and Kornacki added 12 points. Freshman Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) had six points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Randolph-Macon was led by Molly Ariail and Jennifer O'Briant, who each scored 14 points. Ariail added 13 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 41.5% for the game, and limited Randolph-Macon to 27.6% shooting. The Eagles forced 22 RMC turnovers.

Mary Washington will visit St. Mary's College on Wednesday in a Capital Athletic Conference game starting at 6:00 p.m.
