The University of Mary Washington swim & dive teams opened the season Friday at the Potomac Relay Invitational, competing in a full slate of relay events against a strong field at George Mason University. Both the men and the women finished in fourth place of five teams -- all who finished ahead were NCAA Division I schools.
The women posted a fourth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Cora Eckard, Ann Karr, Maddie Kryszon and Ava Rice combined for a time of 8:30.81. The Eagles also placed fourth in the 300-yard butterfly relay at 3:14.88, with Carleigh Dillman, Nora McMullen and Marina Klein teaming up.
The women's 400-yard medley relay turned in one of the team's strongest performances of the day, finishing second in 4:15.17. Maddie Timmons, Christina Korkos, Spera Moy-Jacobs and Carleigh Dillman represented the Eagles. The team also recorded a 5:04.89 in the 500-yard freestyle relay, with Alex Kerner, Megan Fallin, Ann Karr and Cora Eckard competing.
The Eagles added a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:49.94 behind Maddie Timmons, Soleil Clifford, Christina Korkos and Spera Moy-Jacobs. UMW's second 200-yard medley relay team finished in 1:58.19.
On the men's side, UMW earned a pair of second-place finishes. Tucker Burkey, Rece Storer and Theo Dingman combined for a 2:37.69 in the 300-yard backstroke relay, while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Rece Storer, Sam Roundtree, Sam Mahoney and Thomas Sites posted a 1:25.80.
The Eagles also finished fourth in the 400-yard medley relay at 3:41.73, with Burkey, Roundtree, Storer and Ricky Craine swimming the event. UMW recorded a 2:45.04 in the 300-yard butterfly relay and a 3:05.73 in the 300-yard breaststroke relay.
In the distance relays, UMW's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Sam Mahoney, Thomas Sites, Brandon Harvey and Rowan Turner finished in 7:30.87, while Rowan Turner and Ricky Craine combined for a 10:20.32 in the 1,000-yard freestyle relay.
The Eagles also posted a 4:24.98 in the men's 500-yard freestyle relay, with Brandon Harvey, Theo Dingman, Sam Mahoney and Ricky Craine competing.
UMW's second men's teams added additional performances throughout the meet, including a 1:45.34 in the 200-yard medley relay, 2:53.25 in the 300-yard butterfly relay, 2:49.10 in the 300-yard backstroke relay, 4:38.69 in the 500-yard freestyle relay, 4:36.08 in the women's 400-yard medley relay and 1:46.76 in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Eagles are back in action to open the dual meet season on Friday, Oct. 9 against Washington & Lee in Fredericksburg at 4 p.m.
