Box Score The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated Whitman College, 4-1, on Saturday in the second round of NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio. The Eagles improve to 21-6 on the season.
UMW started the proceedings by scoring the doubles point. Juniors
Evan Fisher and
Jack Riordan scored a 6-3 win over Artem Manov and Charles Rush at two, and juniors
Asher Willenborg and
Trevor Rein followed immediately after with a 6-2 win at one over Niklas Nordahl Jensen and Alexander Stage.
In singles, UMW added a point at six, as Fisher scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hanri Luo. Riordan then defeated Manov, 6-4, 6-4, at three to put the Eagles on the brink of victory, and, after Whitman scored a win at one, it was freshman
Ryan Battaglia who clinched the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win at five.
The Eagles will move on to Sunday's third round, where they will face host Case Western Reserve University at noon. The winner will advance to the national quarterfinals in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 19-26.
