Freddy Rogers, Jessica Oberlies Named UMW Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Senior student-athletes Freddy Rogers and Jessica Oberlies have been named the 2024-25 University of Mary Washington Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Rogers, a United Soccer Coaches first team All-America selection as the goalie for the nationally-ranked and Coast-to-Coast Conference champion men's soccer team, also gained consensus first team Academic All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches as well as the College Sports Communicators.

Rogers, who will graduate in December, carries a 3.9 grade-point-average as a marketing major, was just the 13th student-athlete in the athletic department's history to be named to a CoSIDA/CSC All-American team and the first since 2016.

The 2024 season was a success to say the least for Rogers and the Eagles, who were ranked the No. 1 team in the nation for the majority of the year. Rogers recorded a 19-2-2 record in net -- which is tied for the second most wins in a single season in program history -- as well as a 19-1-2 record against NCAA Div. III opponents.

Rogers started all 23 games in net for UMW, playing in over 2,000 minutes this season. He recorded 63 saves and nine shutouts, while being named the 2024 Coast-to-Coast Defensive Player of the Year.

Oberlies was one of seven May graduates with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, gaining the Colgate W. Darden Award. A dual major in environmental science and Spanish, she competed for four years on UMW's cross country and track and field teams, gaining Cost-to-Coast Athletic Conference All-Academic team and the UMW Athletic Honor roll honors.

She served as co-president of the UMW Student-Athlete Advisory Council, and gained College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors, as she finished the outdoor season ranked regionally in the 10,000 meters in outdoor track. She has traveled for research to Spain, Guatemala, and Venezuela.

Coming to Mary Washington from Greensboro, North Carolina, Oberlies is a member of the Honors Program and graduates with University Honors, as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and ready to explore and make an impact on the world. She will be implementing her scientific knowledge, field experiences and international adventures as a coastal resource volunteer with the Peace Corps in the Philippines, starting in July.

The Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards are the top awards given by the athletic department, and have been presented every year since 1990.
