The 21st ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated the University of California Santa Cruz, 4-2, on Saturday in the semifinal round of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Newport News, Va. The Eagles improve to 15-9 on the season, and advance to Sunday's championship match.
The Eagles had to come from behind on Saturday, after dropping the doubles point with a 6-2 loss at one and a 6-1 loss at three. UMW pulled ahead in the team score with straight set wins from
Matt Scott at six (6-3, 6-3), and from
Evan Fisher at three (6-4, 6-3).Â
After the Banana Slugs pulled even with a victory at five, UMW #1
Trevor Rein scored a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Andrew Tjoa, and #2
Brock Ladehoff also rallied in the third to defeat Radin Sadeghi, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5, for the clinching point.
The Eagles will face host Christopher Newport on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. for the conference championship. The Eagles defeated the Captains, 4-3, in regular season action. The Eagles have won 27 conference championships, including each of the past three.
