#15 UMW Women's Tennis Captures 14th Straight CAC Championship; Tops #23 CNU, 5-1

The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated 23rd ranked Christopher Newport University, 5-1, on Saturday in the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Championship to claim their 14th consecutive league championship. The Eagles move to 19-5 on the season.

UMW jumped ahead with the first point in doubles, as Kait Brogan and Taylor Diffley scored the first point at one with an 8-1 win over Alexandra Drye and McKinney Harwood. The Captains answered with a win at two, as Kate Huck and Johanna Ranta-aho topped Ashley Barrow and Rachel Summers, 8-3.

The Eagles picked up a pivotal point at three to take the lead into singles, as Caroline Mosberg and Danielle Mirabella won over Emily Morgan and Kate Carlson by a 9-7 margin.

In singles, the Eagles jumped ahead by notching the first set in five of six matches. Mosberg gained the Eagles' third point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Drye at four, and Mirabella took a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Elizabeth Wessel at six.

Summers scored the clinching point at three, with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Huck.

The Eagles will gain the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin on Friday, May 12.
