#24 UMW Men's Tennis Falls to #26 Johns Hopkins in NCAA Tourney Second Round

The 24th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team fell behind early and was unable to recover in a 5-0 loss to #26 Johns Hopkins University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Friday afternoon. The Eagles close with a record of 18-10 overall.

Johns Hopkins gained control after taking all three doubles matches. The duo of Mike Buxbaum and Jeremy Dubin won at one doubles, 8-3, over Brandon Griffin and Matt Miles, and Nicholas Garcia and Emerson Walsh won at two, 8-4, over Eric Hurwitz and Nolan Perugini.

The Blue Jays completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at three doubles, as David Perez and Scott Thygesen topped David Lunding-Johansson and Patrick Hughes.

In singles, the Eagles jumped out with first set wins from Lunding-Johansson at two in a tiebreaker, and from Miles at four singles, 6-3. But JHU gained wins at one, with Buxbaum downing Griffin, 6-3, 6-1, and at six, as Walsh defeated Derek Hagino, 6-2, 6-1.

Johns Hopkins will advance to the third round and compete against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, while the Eagles close at 18-10.
