The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team, playing without injured number two singles player and doubles All-American
Kaz Murata, jumped out to a lead after doubles and captured four singles matches in topping Salisbury University, 6-3, for the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Friday at the Battleground. The Eagles claim their 11th straight CAC title and will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament on May 14-16.
The Eagles won two of three doubles matches, including an 8-6 win at one by freshman
Brian Hope and senior
Evan Goff, and an 8-2 win by freshmen
Sam Wichlin and
Will Apperson.
After Salisbury won at six singles, UMW regained the lead at 3-2 as
Evan Goff won at four in straight sets. The Eagles upped the advantage to 4-2 as
Will Apperson won at two in straight sets. The clinching match came at one, as Wichlin won in three sets to give the Eagles and head coach todd Helbling his 11th straight CAC crown.
The Eagles will be back in action in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on May 7.
