UMW Volleyball Falls to W&L, 3-1, on Friday Evening

The University of Mary Washington volleyball falls to Washington and Lee University, 3-1, on Friday evening in the UMW Classic in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles slip to 2-4 on the season.

In the first set, UMW got out to a 3-0 start as Wren Berry and Tenley Hares recorded a kill each. The Generals then went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. The Eagles went on a run and had a two point advantage, 11-9, on a kill from Peyton Dunow. W&L tied the set up at 15 a piece on a kill. The end of the first set went down to the wire as the two teams traded points. The Generals went up three, 22-19, to close in on the set. UMW closed the set out with six straight points. Savannah Powers and Krista Rodgers recorded two blocks in that, including on set point, to win the set.

After UMW got out to a 4-2 advantage, the Generals won six straight points to go up 8-4. With the Eagles down 10-6, they recorded four straight kills to tie the set up at 10. Wren Berry pushed the Eagles ahead in the second set as she recorded a kill to put UMW up 15-14. Again, the set came down to the wire as they traded point-for-point. Rodgers gave the Eagles a 22-21 lead on a kill from Berry. W&L closed the second set on a 5-2 run to win 26-24.

UMW took a 3-2 lead in the third set on a kill from Powers. W&L scored eight straight points to take a commanding 10-3 lead. The Eagles closed the gap to five, 14-9, as Dunow and Rodgers recorded a block. The Eagles climbed back in the set and cut the Generals lead to within three, 17-14. W&L gained back their five point advantage, 21-16, on an attack error by the Eagles. From there, the Generals closed out the set and won 25-22.

The fourth set was a tight one from the start as nobody gained more than a two point advantage in the first 14 points. UMW got out to a 10-7 lead, benefitting from two attack errors from the Generals. The Eagles held the lead 15-14 on a kill from Lexie Hendricks. From there, W&L went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, 21-15. The Eagles fought till the last point but came up short 25-22.

Dunow led the team with 14 kills. Rodgers and Powers each chipped in 11 kills a piece. Berry dished out 37 assists, while Kendal Hall recorded 23 digs.

UMW will be back in action tomorrow as they will host Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m. and then Virginia Wesleyan at 5 p.m. as part of the UMW Classic.
