The University of Mary Washington softball team saw its magical run through the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament come to an end on Saturday, as the Eagles fell to Christopher Newport University, 4-3, in the championship. The fifth seeded Eagles, who won three thrilling contests to get to the finals, close their season with a 25-20 record.
The Captains forged ahead with two runs in the first inning, but the Eagles responded with one in the second on a Kristen Lunquist home run. CNU scored a pair in the third to take a 4-1 lead, but again the Eagles responded with two in the fourth.
Both teams were retired in order through the top of the sixth. CNU got a leadoff walk in the sixth, but Kara Deppe then retired the next three batters. The Eagles went down in order in the seventh, giving the Captains a hard fought title.
UMW closes the season with 25 victories, 12 better than last season in a greatly improved season, and finishes having advanced to the CAC Championship for the first time since 2009.
