UMW Rowing Teams Compete at Kerr Cup in Philadelphia

The University of Mary Washington rowing team enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures in Philadelphia on Saturday, 14 April, as they competed in the Kerr Cup regatta hosted by Drexel University.

All crews encountered significant headwinds, resulting in some slow race times.  The Mary Washington men's varsity pair of Kyle Moran and Sean Ingraham easily advanced from their heat race to the final.  The final was a neck and neck race between the top pair from Washington College and the Mary Washington pair, with these two boats finishing a full 30 seconds ahead of the third and fourth place boats in the race.  Washington College won the close contest by 3 seconds, finishing just one boat length ahead of the Mary Washington pair.

The men's 8+ race saw the Mary Washington crew not advancing from the heat race to the semi-finals.

The men's freshmen 4+ race was rowed very well by the Mary Washington crew, but only two boats from the heat race advanced to the final, with the Mary Washington crew finishing in third place ahead of West Point.  Of the 11 crews in the men's freshmen 4+ race, Mary Washington's time was the sixth fastest, behind crews from Delaware, Drexel, Marist, Fordham, and Temple.  Crews posting slower times included Bucknell, Iona College, and two crews from West Point.

The women's 4+ race for DIII colleges was a six boat race, won fairly handily by North Park University, followed by Franklin and Marshall.  The next three places were very close, where Mary Washington took fifth place, 9 seconds behind Haverford College and just 4 seconds behind St. Mary's.  Bryn Mawr finished more than 16 seconds behind Mary Washington.
