UMW Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to NC Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting North Carolina Wesleyan College at Goolrick Gymnasium on Thursday night. Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 15-12.

After falling behind 2-0 in sets, UMW rebounded nicely to tie the score before falling disastrously behind, 6-0, in the fifth set. UMW reeled off four straight points to get back into the set, but were unable to take the lead, coming as close as 13-12 in the fifth.

The Eagles were led by junior Karissa Herrick (Colts Neck, N.J., Colts Neck), who had 11 kills and seven total blocks, while Tola Adebanjo (Overland Park, Ks., Blue Valley Northwest) had 11 kills as well. Junior Ellen Smethurst (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant School) had 10 kills and five total blocks, and sophomore Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va., Manchester) added 10 kills and 17 digs for UMW.

Mary Washingotn will visit Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday for a tri-match with Washington & Lee University.
