Juniors Karissa Herrick (Colts Neck, N.J., Colts Neck) and Ellen Smethurst (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant School) each scored eight kills to lead the University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-1 win over St. Mary's College in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday at the Anderson Center. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14.
Herrick had eight kills with no errors in 24 attempts, and also added three total blocks and three aces. Smethurst had eight kills and three total blocks. Sophomore Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va., Manchester) had seven kills, 15 digs and three aces. Senior Katie Shiflett (Weyers Cave, Va., Fort Defiance) had 20 assists and Sammy Hogue (Springfield, Va., West Springfield) added 13 for UMW, while Christine Tran (Oakton, Va., Oakton) had 17 digs.
The fourth seeded Eagles will visit top-seeded Salisbury University in the CAC semifinals on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
