The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Lynchburg College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Goolrick Gymnasium before a full house for the team's annual Dig Pink fundraiser. Game scores were 25-19, 26-24, 25-19.
The balanced Eagle effort saw Laura Gomez (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) score nine kills, Tola Adebanjo (Overland Park, Ks., Blue Valley Northwest) add eight kills and 12 digs, Karissa Herrick (Colts Neck, N.J., Colts Neck) add eight kills and six total blocks, and Hannah Lawson (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) added eight kills. Junior setter Katie Shiflett (Weyers Cave, Va., Fort Defiance) had 30 assists, libero Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va., Manchester) had 13 digs, Christine Tran (Oakton, Va., Oakton) scored nine digs, and Ellen Smethurst (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant School) had four blocks, and the match-winning kill.
Mary Washington improves to 16-7 overall, and will visit Stevenson University in a Capital Athletic Conference match on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
