University of Mary Washington sophomore Rachel Summers won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Regional singles championship on Monday at the Battleground, becoming the first UMW player since 2000 to win the bracket.
Summers, the nine seed, defeated Anjali Kashyap of Carnegie Mellon, 7-6 (5), 6-4, in the final. Earlier in the day, she topped Hannah Rosenfield of Carnegie Mellon, 7-5, 6-3.
Summers will advance to the ITA Small College National Championships in October. She becomes the first Eagles to claim the singles flight since Lea Schon in 2000.
