Seniors Catherine Kennedy and Lauren Callison each scored three goals, and junior Keller Torrey added two goals and five assists to lead the 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 12-2 win over St. Joseph's College (N.Y.) on Sunday at the Battleground in both teams' season opener.
Kennedy opened the scoring, with Callison following with the next two scores. Torrey then scored twice, before the guests scored their first goal, with 13 minutes left. Jenna Petrucelli scored less than two minutes later, followed by Addie Hawley, Hallie Ertel, and twice by Kennedy, as UMW led, 10-1, at halftime.
In the second half, UMW received goals from Maggie Nunn and Callison before the Golden Eagles saw Jackie Myers score their second tally.
In all, UMW led in shots, 46-5, and had 33 ground balls to 21 for the guests. Kathryn Stiltz had one save for UMW, splitting time with freshman Taylor Paige. UMW led in draw controls, 10-5.
The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they host top-ranked Gettysburg College at 4:00 p.m.
