WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds, and freshman Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 57-44 victory at Gallaudet University on Monday night in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 10-0 in league play, and 15-3 overall.
The Eagles scored the first four points of the game, but Gallaudet responded with a 9-0 run and led 9-4 with 12:27 remaining in the first half. A 10-0 run by UMW gave the Eagles a 21-14 lead with 4:44 to play, and the Eagles led, 27-19, at halftime.
The second half saw the Eagles lead throughout, with Gallaudet coming as close as three points on two occasions. UMW finished the game with a 16-7 spurt to finish with the 13-point margin of victory.
The Eagles shot 34% from the field (23-67), and went 11-16 from the free throw line, while the Bison shot 33% (12-36), making 20-35 free throw attempts. The Eagles forced 26 Bison turnovers. Mary Washington also won the rebounding battle, 42-36, with 20 offensive boards.
In addition to Wimmer's 12 and Dye's 10 and 10, sophomore forward Claire Brooks (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) had eight points and seven rebounds, and Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) added seven points and five boards. Gallaudet was led by Easter Faafiti's 20 points.
Mary Washington will host Stevenson University in another CAC contest on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
