UMW Softball Splits with Catholic to Close 2011 Season with 20 Wins

The University of Mary Washington split its season-ending doubleheader with Catholic University on Tuesday at the Battleground to finish the year with 20 victories. The Eagles won the opener, 2-0, before falling, 6-2, in the finale.

In game one, UMW used two first inning runs and held on for a 2-0 win. Brandee Adams and Amanda Adams each had two hits to pace the Eagle offense. Freshman Julianne Sweat pitched 6.2 innings of shutout ball in gaining the win, allowing four hits while walking two and striking out one. Nicole Black gained the save by getting the final out.

In game two, the Eagles led, 2-1, into the fifth, but Catholic scored four times in the seventh in a 6-2 win. Brandee Adams again led the charge at the plate for UMW with a pair of hits, while Bireet Chitty and Danielle Cunetta each had a double, with Cunetta driving both Eagle runs.

Cunetta took the loss for UMW, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in five innings.

The Eagles finish with 20 wins for the fifth time in the past six seasons.
