The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swim teams opened the 2009-10 dual meet season at home with a pair of victories over Washington & Lee University on Friday night at Goolrick Natatorium. Both teams are 1-0 on the season.
The men received wins from the 200 yard medley relay (Nick Eckhoff, Austin Clark, Stephen Clendenin, Justin Anderson) with a time of 1:38.58, and took 1-2-3 in the 1000 freestyle, with Jack McHugh (10:16.08), Andrew Garofolo (10:22.28), and Chris Shifflett (10:25.69). UMW then took 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle, with Brad Dunn (1:48.57), Justin Anderson (1:49.15), and McHugh (1:49.55), before Eckhoff took first in the 100 yard backstroke (55.14).
Clark then took first in the 100 yard breastsroke (1:01.78)and Stephen Clendenin won the 200 yard butterfly (1:58.29). McHugh then won the 500 freestyle (4:59.74) as Dunn took second (5:00.44) and Ian McCormick finished third (5:02.09). Clendenin was tops in the 200 IM (1:59.98) before the Eagles won the 400 yard free relay at 3:16.30 (Brian O'Donnell, Dunn, Clark, Anderson).
The women won the 200 medley relay at 1:52.23 (Kelly Scott, Megan DeSmit, Nina Sawyer, Adriana Lesiuk), with Cameron Figuers winning the 100 free at 10:59.03. Sarah Crockett placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:58.08), and Kelly Scott won the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.15). DeSmit won the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:09.14, and Sawyer won the 200 yard butterfly at 2:13.26. Lesiuk took top honors in the 50 yard freestyle at 25.21, and UMW finished 1-2-3 in the 100 free, with Crockett (54.44), Lesiuk (56.54, and Chelsie Adams (57.34).
Virginia Page won the 200 yard backstroke (2:16.13), DeSmit won the 200 breaststroke at 2:29.60, and Crockett won the 500 free at 5:21.59. Sawyer took first in the 100 yard fly at 59.93, and DeSmit won the 200 IM at 2:15.89.
The Eagles will return to action on Friday, October 23, as they visit the College of William and Mary at 5:30 p.m.
